I still experience triggers from time to time, and I know many women who are years ahead of me on their healing journey who say the same thing. However, the healing process is ongoing, so the Amends from the addict should be ongoing or “living” too. Some what is a living amends addicts wait until they are on Step Nine of the Sexohlics 12 steps program. Step Nine states, “Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.” So receiving a Living Amends letter can take a while.

However, these promises are usually the result of deep feelings of shame, guilt, and regret and may not be genuine for some. Many times, these kinds of promises serve to alleviate the wrongdoer’s guilt and so that they can say they apologized before their loved one died. With these kinds of promises, there may not be enough genuine intention of changing their hurtful patterns and behaviors. It’s really hard to apologize to those you’ve hurt — it takes courage and humility and requires a deep, intense look at yourself. Thankfully, there are tips you can take to help make your living amends permanent and lasting. One of the best ways you can make long-lasting changes to your relationships is by being true to your word.

Making amends is more than just saying “I’m sorry.” It’s going the extra mile to make things right. By making amends, you are clearly demonstrating the difference between how you acted before and how you will behave from now on. Apologies don’t address the undercurrents of our choices in addiction, nor do they illustrate our intentions for the future. It wasn’t my job to tell him what I wanted in the Living Amends letter.

My Loved One Needs Help

It means mending, or (quite literally) fixing, the relationship. Addiction takes over your life, stealing both your joy and your time, and making it impossible for you to give back to others and live a generous life. Instead, as you pursue a life in recovery, focus on being generous with your time and giving back to others.
