Mitochondrial Health Program

Mitochondrial Health Program

What is Mitochondria

Mitochondria are present in every single cell of our bodies, and their job is to create the energy that powers the cell. They can be thought of as the energy powerhouses that keep each cell functioning in the way it is designed to do.

Organs with a higher need for energy, such as the brain, liver and muscles contain more mitochondria per cell than found in other body parts. Mitochondrial activity can be negatively affected by nutrient deficiencies, or through exposure to toxic chemicals from the environment, processed food, personal care products or medications.

Almost all health conditions involve poor mitochondrial activity to some degree, and unless this function is restored, it is difficult to achieve optimal health. Chronic mitochondrial dysfunction is always involved in diseases such as:

  • Age related neurological disease, eg Alzheimer’s
  • Malignant tumours and premalignancy
  • Infertility and miscarriage
  • Congestive heart failure and heart problems in general
  • Muscular diseases
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Metabolic syndrome and fatty liver disease and many other health conditions.

Testing for mitochondrial dysfunction

Elspeth makes use of general pathology lab tests and specific functional pathology tests (primarily the Organic Acids test) to test for mitochondrial dysfunction, when necessary.

Careful symptom investigation can also point to poor mitochondrial activity, (just about every sick person is tired) so when cost is an issue, a standard program of diet, lifestyle practices and specific nutritional supplements will be used to restore optimal mitochondrial health as a foundation to any treatment.

Comprehensive testing

Elspeth may use general pathology tests to gain more information about your current health status. These tests include blood tests, stool or urine tests or breath tests. Example of these are:

  1.  Full Thyroid Function
  2. Female  or Male Hormone Profile
  3. Coeliac Disease
  4. General Wellness blood profile
  5. Active B12
  6. Iron Profile
  7. Helicobacter pylori breath test
  8. Fasting glucose, insulin and HbA1C
  9. Vitamin A, B1, B6, C, D and E
  10. Serum zinc, copper, chromium, aluminium, cadmium selenium, lead, , magnesium, calcium, phosphate
  11. Urinary aluminium, arsenic, chromium, copper, iodine, mercury, nickel
  12. Inflammatory markers: High Sensitive C Reactive Protein (HiCRP), CRP, EST
  13. Liver Function Test
  14. Lipid Profile
  15. Allergy Profile
  16. Metabolic Bone Study
  17. Ross River Virus, Epstein Barr Virus
  18. MTHFR
  19. General chemistry anion gap
  20. PSA test
  21. Urine microbiology and culture
  22. Homocysteine

In functional medicine, the focus is not on the pathology but on function. It is based on the understanding that biological changes precedes pathological change. It therefore investigates the CAUSE and MECHANISM of the illness, rather than the body system or organ involved.

In Naturopathy and in Functional Medicine, the aim is to gather enough information about the person to understand the predisposing factors (eg genetics, family history), the triggers (eg specific life events) and the mediators (biological changes caused, for example, by nutritional imbalances) that together have contributed to the illness. Unless the causes are properly investigated and addressed, complete healing is unlikely leaving the only other option (treating the symptoms rather than the causes) as “the solution”. Functional Medicine Laboratory tests seek to investigate the cause of illness as well as providing tools for the prevention of disease and premature aging. Assessments are available to investigate endocrine, gastrointestinal, immunological, metabolic and nutritional balance.  These tests include but are not confined to:

  1. Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis
  2. Intestinal Permeability Test
  3. Organic Acids Test
  4. Adrenocortex Stress Profile
  5. Comprehensive Parasitology Profile
  6. Allergy Testing
  7. Mould/Biotoxin Panel
  8. Tick -Borne Disease Immunology (eg Lyme Disease)
  9. Autoimmune Assessement
  10. Comprehensive Cardiovascular Profile
  11. Neurotransmitter Profile
  12. Environmental Pollutant Exposure Panel
  13. Amino Acids Assessment
  14. Hair Mineral Analysis
  15. Heavy Metal Testing (pre and post chelation)
  16. Genomic Assessments (eg cardiac DNA profile)

The purpose of an Iridology consultation is to empower you with this understanding and to offer guidance to support to help with specific health challenges (current or future potential).

Iridology does not diagnose diseases
It is an analysis of the structure and appearance of your iris to describe tissue function and emotional and personality aspects.

Every person’s iris is a unique mandala, a colourful pattern describing the dynamic within. Your iris shows your constitutional tendencies, your strengths and weaknesses, current areas of irritation and stress (both emotional, mental and physical), and core nutritional requirements.
Your iris helps you to know what you need to do to take care of yourself now and in future. The structure, shapes and colours in your eye all have meaning, and when interpreted and understood, offer the wisdom of self-understanding.

While Physical Iridology and Rayid are concerned mainly with the coloured part of your eye, the iris, Sclerology is a science that is concerned with the markings and colourings in the whites of your eyes (scleras).

As a trained Sclerologist I practice the art of interpreting these signs as indicators of compromised health.

The presence, shape and appearance of blood vessels in your sclera and the presence, colour and form of coloured and or gel signs can all be interpreted to gain understanding relating to your health.

This can show up more information about current organ and system imbalances, many of which are difficult to see in the iris.

Body pH can be evaluated using samples of your urine and saliva, and by looking at certain blood indicators. A detailed questionnaire about your dietary intake and lifestyle will also be used.

Body pH is often considered to be the foundation of good health. It is my firm belief, after 24 years of clinical practice, that there are few health conditions that do not improve as a result of returning the body to an alkaline state.

When your body is alkaline, your cells get more oxygen, you have more energy, you age less quickly, you suffer less from pain and inflammation and your mood is brighter. In your treatment, we will take steps to assist you to restore a healthy body pH!
